What is a wave in science

There are two types of waves that i know of

First one is a longitudinal wave- This is where the movement of the particles are parallel to the energy.

An example of this motion is clapping or speaking into a microphone

The second wave is a transverse wave. This is where they move at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the waves advanced.

An example of this is ripples on the surface of water.
