What happened in San Francisco in 1906?

On 18th April 1906, a massive earthquake shook San Francisco, California. It lasted for less than a minute but it left San Francisco in a disastrous situation.

The earthquake started several fires that burned for three days and destroyed 500 city blocks. Estimated death toll was 3,000 and left 200,000 residents homeless, half of the city's population.

Despite the quick response in giving aid from various government bodies and other countries, survivors endured suffering in the weeks after the worst natural disaster in U.S. History.

Survivors slept in tents, stood in long lines for food, and cooked on the streets to avoid starting additional fires.
