Buffalo Soldiers were African American veterans of the Civil War who joined the US army to help protect western settlers.

Buffalo Soldiers originated in 1866 from six different Cavalry Regiments formed exclusively by colored people. After the Civil War, they were assigned to protect western settlers during the Indian Wars, capture cattle rustlers and control the Native Americans of the Plains. It is believed that the Native Americans named them “Buffalo Soldiers” because of their appareance.
