The main reason behind the north and the south having different positions on higher tariffs was that the North had most of the factories, while the south was mainly purchasing the products in those factories. the north being the manufacturing hub wanted higher tariffs to gain more profit. The south on the other hand was the main consumer base and they wanted the products at a lower tariff to increase their purchasing power. The south could also go for the foreign products if the tariffs were much higher. this was the main reason behind the north and south having two different opinions about the same subject of higher tariff.
