In the given question it is pointed out that 8.7 people died per 1000 residing people in the year 2000. This was the ration in the United States of America in the year 2000. It is also given in the question that the number of people living in the United States of America during the year 2000 was 281421906. It is required to find out the number of deaths that occurred during the year 2000.
So
For every 1000 residing people in the United States, the number of deaths = 8.7
Then for 281421906 people residing, the number of deaths = (8.7 * 281421906)/1000
= 2448370582/1000
= 2448370.58
So the number of deaths during the year 2000 in United states was 2448370.58
