say you had 089,659 you would round the 0 to 1 because 8 is more than 5 so the answer is 100,000

The next higher hundred thousand is 100,000 .
The next lower hundred thousand is zero.
89,659 is closer to 100,000 than it is to zero.
So when rounded to the nearest hundred thousand, 89,659 becomes 100,000 .
