Final answer:

Estimating the product helps Sarah determine that the answer is not reasonable.

Step-by-step explanation:

When Sarah found that the product of 49 and 805 is 3,165, she can estimate the answer to determine if it is reasonable. In this case, estimating means rounding the numbers to the nearest ten or hundred to get a rough approximation of the product. By doing so, Sarah would see that 50 times 800 is 40,000, which is significantly larger than 3,165. Therefore, the answer of 3,165 is not reasonable and may indicate an error in calculations.

If we round the two values (49 and 805) to numbers more easily worked with and use this product as an estimate we can see 3 165 is much to small

If we round 49 to 50 and 805 to 800 and observe the product of these two values we see an estimate of 40 000

This number is vastly larger than 3 165 so therefore the estimate shows that her answer is not reasonable
