Why do so many trade routes run along waterways?

Moving goods through the sea is way easier and requires less energy. Why? Because the waters' currents will help with the transport.

Because moving traded goods great distances by floating them
on the water is just about the easiest and cheapest way to
deliver them from one place to another place.
