How can the existence of spectra help to prove that energy levels in atoms exist?

Answer:

The spectra determine that atoms discharge photons in close bands. The narrow bands can all be described as comparing to variations in two energy levels of the form E/n². If there were no distinctive levels, the spectrum would be the constant blackbody spectrum with no particular bands.
