Conversion:
3 km - 3000m
0.5 km - 500 m
1.05 km - 1050 m

Solution:
3, 000 m = 500m + 1050m + n
3, 000 m = 1550m + n
n = 3, 000 m - 1550m
n = 1450m

1.45 kilometers must PJ hike to reach the river.
