What made the middle passage such a terrible ordeal for the enslaved africans?

Slaves remained below decks,where the air grew foul from the vomit ,blood and excrement between 5%-20% of slaves perished from disease and other causes

Answer: The correct answer is : The enslaved Africans were chained, whipped, brutally treated, there was not enough space for so many slaves, they gave them very little food and little water. There was a lot of confusion between them and most were sick. When they died they were thrown overboard.
