The Homestead Act made it possible for millions of people to achieve the dream of owning a house. It made it possible for people to become landowners at little or no cost. This was due to the fact that there was a lot of land which was unaccounted for and many leaders wanted people to own land without owning slaves. The requirements were easy: residency in the United States, 21 and up or head of a family and anyone who had never taken up arms against the United States.
