Why was monotheism unusual in its time and place?

Because at the time when the first monotheistic religions were being spread (Christianity and Judaism for example) the majority of the people (if not all), who actually held spiritual/religious beliefs, believed in polytheistic religions.

This means that they believed in many gods where each god or goddess had their owns specifics and "territory" for which they were responsible.
