The answer is
multiplication
.
4/1 = 4
16/4 = 4
64/16 = 4
So that means each number is getting multipled by 4 to find the next number. :)

Each number is
multiplied
by 4 to get the next number.
1 is
multiplied
by 4 to get 4.
4 is
multiplied
by 4 to get 16.
16 is
multiplied
by 4 to get 64.
And so on.
So the operation that determines the pattern is
MULTIPLICATION
.
