If you're adding a negative number you move to the left, because that's where negative numbers are. if you're adding a positive number you move to the right.
example:
-4 + 7
you move seven spots to the right, since 7 is positive the result is 3
4 + -5
move 5 spots to the left, since 5 is negative, the result is -1.

Answer:

To determine where to move we must see the mathematical sign of the second rational number we are adding

Explanation:

A rational number is any number that can be expressed as a quotient or division of two integers. For example 3 can be expressed as 6/2. When we add we have two terms.: a and b

a+b

The sign of b, the second number, will determine the direction of the movement. If b is positive we move right and if b is negative we move to the left independently if the starting point a ( be a positive or negative number in the real line).
