How important was Upton Sinclair’s the jungle to passage of the Meat Inspection Act?

If I remember correctly, it was very important. It exposed the disgusting conditions within the meat industry to the masses. And as awareness grew, it was nearly impossible to ignore such conditions. This eventually leads to government acknowledgment and regulations such as the Meat Inspection Act.
