4 x 1 + 8 x 1/10 + 7 x 1/100 + 5 x 1/1000 = 4.875

To write this in expanded form, you just need to break down the number by place value and add them up together. The problem asks you do to this in fraction form.

Here is a table you can refer to when you are looking at numbers with decimals:

Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths

1 . 1/10 1/100 1/1000

4 . 8 7 5

Expanded form:

Fraction:

4 x 1 + 8 x 1/10 + 7 x 1/100 + 5 x 1/1000 = 4.875

Decimal:

4 + 0.8 + 0.07 + 0.005 = 4.875

The answer to this question would be 4 7/8

When trying to convert a decimal number into a fraction, knowing the decimal number of some fraction will help.
1/3 would be 0.33 or 0.66
1/4 would be 0.25 or 0.50 or 0.75 etc
In this case, 0.875 is a part of 8 fraction which was 7/8
