The outer layer of the nucleus that separates it from the cytoplasm is the nuclear envelope. It is considered as a highly regulated barrier and is described as a double-membrane structure which is the outermost part of the nucleus. It is the passageway of molecules from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. It isolates the DNA from molecules that can cause its damage and affect its different functions.
