In the end, President Lincoln suspected that the hazard was justified, despite all the trouble and he consented to feel free to give resupplies to Fort Sumter.

If he had chosen not to resupply Fort Sumter, then Lincoln would have risks the federal government look very weak in the face of obvious insurrection in the South, since it would have seemed like he was scared of starting a conflict.
