What did it mean when Athenian ostracized a fellow citizen?what was the purpose?

In Ancient Athens, it became acceptable to ostracize someone (practically banish them from the city) for a set, limited period of time if it was believed that this person was becoming too powerful and was therefore a threat to the state.
