The Civil War forced the National Government to assume powers that were not granted before by Americans, the National Government had the role of assuring freedom despite expanding its powers such as civil rights legislation. After the War States lost some space for the National Government which expanded its authority over the state’s authority, for example when the Federal government installed federal militias units in the Reconstruction Period.
