James Buchanan promised to end agitation over the issue of slavery.

James Buchanan served as the 15th president of the United States. He held office from 1857 to 1861. He was out of office slightly more than a month when the American Civil War began. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Buchanan along with his running mate John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky claimed victory over Republican John C. Frémont and Know-Nothing Millard Fillmore to win the 1856 election.
