Why is setting important in literature?

I. It reinforces character and theme.
II. It contributes to atmosphere and mood.
III. It adds realism.

I would say II because atmosphere & mood. If someone is in the dark, you would expect them to be sad, or mad, If they're sad no one's gonna be outside playing in a pile of flowers.
