First, I would convert it an improper fraction. 9 5/8 = 77/8 1 7/8 = 15/8 77 - 15 = 62. The denominator stays the same. 62/8. Divide to make it a mixed number. 62/8 = 7 6/8 Simplified to = 7 3/4

The answer is 7 3/4.
Turn into improper fraction
= 77/8 − 15/8

= ((77 × 8) − (15 × 8)) / (8 × 8)

= (616 - 120) / 64

= 496/64

= 31/4
