The geographic feature which served as a barrier to political unity and encouraged the rise of independent city-states in Ancient Greece was the fact that many city-states were islands. Historically, if countries were made up of many different islands, this would isolate people from one another and this was prosperous for independent city-states in Ancient Greece.
