When you look at a map of the world, it probably has lines on it. The ones that go up and down is latitude, like a ladder. The other ones are long and are called longitude.

'Latitude' is an angle.

The latitude of a point on the Earth's surface is
the angle between the equator and that point.

Since the equator is located around the Earth's "middle",
latitude can be an angle either going north or going south
from the equator.

Latitude is never more than 90 degrees:

-- 90 degrees north from the equator is the north pole,
and you can't get any norther than that.

-- 90 degrees south from the equator is the south pole,
and you can't get any souther than that.
