The equation is 2x+x=27
2x means Jay caught twice as much as Blair. and x is the amount of fish Blair caught.
2x+x=27
combine the like terms
3x+27
divide 3 on both sides
x=9
so Jay caught 18 fish, and Blair caught 9

Answer:

Blair caught 9 and Jay caught 18

Explanation:

Given: Jay and Blair went fishing. Together, they caught
27 fish. Jay caught
2 times as many fish as Blair.

To Find: Number of fish caught by Jay and Blair each.

Solution:

Total number of fishes caught by both
=27

let number of fishes caught by Blair
=\text{x}

As,

Number of fish caught by Jay
=2(\text{Number of fish caught by Blair})

Number of fish caught by Jay
=2\text{x}

Total number of fish caught by Jay and Blair

=\text{x}+2\text{x}

3\text{x}

now,

3\text{x}=27

\text{x}=9

Number of fish caught by Blair
=9

Number of fish caught by Jay
=2\text{x}

Number of fish caught by Jay
=2*9

18

Hence the number of fish caught by Jay is
18 and by Blair is
9.
