What barriers to movement did the geography of Africa pose?

The geography of Africa posed to great barriers to movement: first, the Sahara Desert made travel to the south and north of it very difficult due to its vast size; and secondly the Mediterranean Sea was a barrier to the North for many civilizations that could not traverse it.
