There are different subfields of linguistics:
- theoretical linguistics that studies the structure of language
- evolution of language that asks how languages evolved
- historical linguistics that studies how languages change over time
- phycholinguistics that studies how language is processed in the brain
these and other include what the study of human language is concerned with.
