Weathering is often divided into the processes of mechanical weathering and chemical weathering. Wind, water, and ice shape the surface of the earth.

More information ↴
• Mechanical weathering is also known as physical weathering. In this type of weathering, a large rock is disintegrated into smaller pieces of rocks. When rocks disintegrate or break up without experiencing any change in their chemical composition.
• Chemical weathering describes the process of chemicals in rainwater making changes to the minerals in a rock.

• Erosion is the geological process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind, ice, or water.

Mechanical weathering involves the breakdown of rocks through direct contact with atmospheric conditions. Chemical weathering, involves the direct effect of atmospheric chemicals or biologically produced chemicals. Bioerosion describes the erosion of hard ocean substrates. Mass wasting is the down-slope movement of rock and sediments. Slumping happens on steep hillsides.
