To find x we need to remember the definitions of the trigonometric functions:

\sin \theta=\frac{\text{opp}}{\text{hyp}}
\cos \theta=\frac{\text{adj}}{\text{hyp}}
\tan \theta=\frac{\text{opp}}{\text{adj}}

Now, from the figure we notice that we know the adjacent leg to the angle given; and that we want to know the opposite leg of the same angle. Comparing what we know and what we want we conclude that we need to use the tangent function. Plugging the values into the definition of the function we have:

\tan 13=(x)/(8)

Solving for x we have:

\begin{gathered} \tan 13=(x)/(8) \\ x=8\tan 13 \\ x=1.8 \end{gathered}

Therefore x=1.8
