x+1.5=32
this means that x=32-1.5
therefore x= 30.5
and thus the given number, 17, is not a solution for x

To test a number and see whether it's a solution, you write it in place of 'x' and then see whether the equation is a true statement.
17 + 1.5 = 32.
Sadly, 17 + 1.5 is 18.5, not 32. The equation is not a true statement now, so 17 is not a solution.
