The Rosetta Stone is such an important archaeological find, because a) it enabled historians to translate hieroglyphics. This was the first bi-lingual text from Ancient Egypt and it helped archaeologists and historians get the first real translation of the Ancient Egyptian language. It was discovered in 1799 and was written in 196 BC.
