The distributive property
multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products

8x45= 360
8x40=320
8x5=40
8x40 + 8x5 = 360

You could do 8x40=320 and then do 8x5=40 and lastly do 320+40=360
