The cultural period of the Stone Age that started about 2.5 to 2 million years ago, recorded by the beginning use of tools made of chipped stone. The Paleolithic Period stopped at different times in varying parts of the world, frequently around 10,000 years ago in Europe and the Middle East. Also named the Old Stone Age.
