First just distribute what's in the parenthesis with -3.1
0.4x + 1.18 = - 6.2 + .031x
subtract 0.031x on both side
0.4x - .031x = .369x
Also add 6.2 on both side
1.18 + 6.2 = 7.38
7.38 = .369x
Divide 7.38 by .369x
X=20
