Jill had $90. She bought a skirt that normally costs $42 but was on sale for half price. She also bought a T-shirt that was $8 off its regular price. Before sales tax, the total cost of the clothes was $31. What was the regular price of the T-shirt?

What question is being asked in this word problem?

Answer:

  • Hence, the regular price of t-shirt is $18.
  • We are asked to find the regular price of the t-shirt?

Explanation:

It is given that:

Jill had $90.

  • She bought a skirt that normally costs $42 but was on sale for half price.

i.e. the amount she spent on buying skirt=42/2= $ 21.

  • She also bought a T-shirt that was $8 off its regular price.

Let x be the regular price of T-shirt.

i.e. the amount she spent on T-shirt=x-8.

Before sales tax, the total cost of the clothes was $31.

Hence, total cost=cost of skirt+ cost of t-shirt

i.e. 31=21+x-8

i.e. 21+x-8=31

i.e. 21-8+x=31

⇒ 13+x=31

⇒ x=31-13

⇒ x=18.

Hence, the regular price of t-shirt is $18.

We are asked to find the regular price of the t-shirt?
