Why is the greatest common factor of 2 numbers sometimes 1

If the numbers are prime then the only factors are the numbers and 1.
For example - the factors of 5 are 1 and 5 and the factors of 7 are 1 and 7 so they only share the number 1. That is the GCF of 5 and 7.

The greatest common factor of two numbers, one of which is 1, will always be 1.
