(5j^2-3j+4)-(8j^2+2)

where a j is powered 2, the result is -1 , then replace and simplify the brackets

\begin{gathered} (5(-1)-3j+4)-(8(-1)+2) \\ (-5-3j+4)-(-8+2) \\ -5-3j+4+8-2 \end{gathered}

now, group the numbers without j

(-5+4+8-2)-3j

and operate

5-3j

solution is 5-3j
