How do tributaries increase the economic benefits of rivers

One of the economic benefits of rivers is that they provide trade opportunities by providing means of transporting goods - tributaries increase the number of places one can trade with along the river.

Additionally, a river with many tributaries is likely connected with more fertile land than a river with less tributaries (more land has access to water).
