This problem is tough until you clean it up so you can see what's going on.
On the left side, (7 + 5 - 3) = 9 . So the left side is x + 9 .
On the right side, (16 - 8) = 8.
So the equation is really
x + 9 = 8
Subtract 9 from each side:
x = -1
