Rome added territory by conquest.

Serving in the Army in Rome was a desired career for many Romans, as it was a way to wealth ( and for some, to the citizenship) and one served for 25 years- after which one's life was secure. Because of this, Rome had a strong army.

High number of soldiers, and good organisation of the army were the factors that made the acquisition of new territory by conquest possible.
