The Factory Act of 1833 called for an eight hour day work for children between nine and thirteen years old however, adolescents from fourteen to eighteen years old are allowed to work for twelve hours. This law also prohibits the employment of children under nine years old because they are supposed to be enrolled in elementary schools instead of working in the factory. This act also broke the pattern of whole families working together in the factory due to the required standard shifts for all workers.
