The 13th amendment does get rid of the institution of slavery. However, it was passed in the year 1865.

The 13th amendment would be known as one of the three Reconstruction amendments. These amendments were supposed to help newly freed African-American people to gain rights in American society. This included the ability to work for wages, citizenship rights (14th amendment), and the ability for African-American men to vote in political elections (15th amendment).
