b. He was the first Englishman to sail around the world.
Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) was an English sailor and navigator known for its involvement in piracy against Spanish ships and possessions and illicit slave trading but admired by English people for his expeditions.
In 1577, Queen Elizabeth gave him the task to lead an expedition around South America through the Straits of Magellan and explore the coast nearby. Drake ended his trip, returning home via the Pacific in September 1580, becoming the first Englishman to sail around the world. The queen rewarded him for this with a knighthood.
