France mostly focussed on trade in the New World, mostly because this proved to be the most significant way to make money of the available resources.

Correct answer:

Trade

Jacques Cartier sailed down the St. Lawrence River to Canada during the 1530s. Cartier had the intention of establishing a permanent settlement, but due to the cold they failed to establish themselves. For this reason, Cartier managed to establish cordial business relationships with several Native American tribes that allowed the French to establish temporary trading sites. French temporary shops were for much of the 1500s.
