The USS Maine was sent to Cuba in 1898 to bring home US citizens that were in danger from the fighting going on in Cuba between Spain and Cuba.

The USS Maine was a US Battleship that was sent to Cuba to protect American people, and interests after the riots of January 1898 in Cuba, because of their war against Spain for independence. An explosion sank the USS Maine in Havana in February and killed 266 of the 354 crew members. The explosion became one of the leading causes of the Spanish American war that started in April that year.
