x - y = 28 (difference between the two numbers)
and
x - 8 = 2y (8 less than twice the smaller number)
From the first . . . x = 28 + y
28 + y - 8 = 2y
20 = 2y - y
20 = y
x - 20 = 28
x = 28 + 20 = 48
