Answer:

Sparta ruined Athens's farmland to try to get Athens to fight on land. Sparta wanted to cut off food supplies so that Athens would surrender. Athens relied on its strong navy

There were several different battle strategies of Athens and Sparta in the Peloponnesian War, but many relied on the idea of attrition--that they wanted to wear the other side down.
