4 lb = cherries

Tainly

1 pineapple = $3.65

3 lb cherries

P = price of cherries

total price = 1 watermelon + 4 lb cherries + 1 pineapple + 3 lb cherries

Substitution

Total price = 7.85 + 4p + 3.65 + 3p

Simplification

Total price = 11.5 + 7p

Equation for Elena = 7.85 + 4p

Tainly equation = 3.65 + 3p

How much Elena spent = 7.85 + 4p - 3.65 - 3p

= 4.2 + p
